Emotional Health

TAME is The Good Place’s approach to mental health education for children.

Designed for children from approximately 8 years of age, TAME creates a safe and accessible way to introduce conversations about mental health, emotions and wellbeing.

The aim isn’t to turn children into therapists or ask them to share personal experiences.

It’s to give them knowledge, language and practical tools they can carry with them as they grow.

What do children learn?

Understanding the mind

Children explore what mental health actually means and learn that, just like physical health, we all have mental health.

They learn that mental health can change over time and that experiencing difficult emotions doesn’t mean there is something wrong with them.

Understanding emotions

Children learn to recognise and understand different emotions and explore why feelings can sometimes seem very big or difficult to manage.

They begin to develop the language to say:

“This is what I’m feeling.”

rather than simply:

“Something is wrong with me.”

Stress & anxiety

Children learn what happens in their bodies and minds when they experience stress or anxiety.

We explore the difference between everyday worries and when worry may be starting to interfere with everyday life.

Most importantly, children learn that feeling worried doesn’t mean they have to face it alone.

Coping & practical strategies

Children are introduced to practical, age-appropriate strategies for navigating difficult emotions and stressful situations.

The focus is on developing a toolbox of strategies, rather than suggesting there is one solution that works for everyone.

Talking & help-seeking

One of the most important things children can learn is how to ask for help.

Children explore:

Who can I talk to?

What if I don’t know how to explain what I’m feeling?

What if I’m worried about what someone will think?

When should I ask for help?

What can I do if a friend is struggling?

We want children to understand that asking for help is a strength, not a failure.

Looking after our mental health

Children learn that mental health isn’t something we only think about when we’re struggling.

They explore the everyday things that can support wellbeing, including relationships, connection, sleep, movement, play, boundaries, self-care and doing things that matter to them.

It’s more than a wellbeing lesson.

A wellbeing lesson might make a child feel good for an hour.

Mental health education aims to give a child knowledge they can use for years.

We want children to leave with:

Knowledge

“I understand what’s happening.”

Language

“I know how to describe it.”

Skills

“I have some things I can try.”

Confidence

“I know who I can talk to.”

Hope

“Difficult feelings can change, and I don’t have to manage them alone.”

A safe space to learn — without pressure to share.

Mental health education needs to be handled thoughtfully.

Children are not required to disclose personal experiences or talk publicly about things happening in their lives.

Sessions are structured to encourage curiosity, discussion and questions while maintaining appropriate boundaries around personal information.

Where a child does disclose a concern, appropriate safeguarding and support pathways are followed.

Age-appropriate. Interactive. Real.

Children don’t learn best by sitting through a lecture about mental health.

Our sessions use conversation, stories, activities, questions, relatable examples and practical exercises to make complex ideas easier to understand.

The language is adapted to the age and developmental stage of the children.

Because talking to an eight-year-old about anxiety shouldn’t sound like talking to an adult about anxiety.

What children should take away

My feelings make sense.

I can learn to understand what I’m experiencing.

I can learn ways to cope.

There are things I can try when things feel difficult.

I don’t have to figure everything out myself.

There are people who can help.

Mental health is something we all have.

Looking after it is part of looking after myself.

It’s okay to ask for help.

Speaking up is a strength.

The earlier we start the conversation, the easier it becomes to have it later.

Children will inevitably experience stress, disappointment, conflict, worry, change and difficult emotions as they grow.

We can’t remove those experiences.

But we can help children develop the knowledge, language and confidence to navigate them.

Mental health education starts before crisis.

The Good Place

Making mental health make sense.

Children’s mental health education | Prevention | Early intervention

info@thegoodplacesydney.com
0420 821 750

Helping children make sense of their minds, emotions and mental health.
